Felicitas Phildor: Whoa, that's a broad category to describe the history of marketing. You could group it with advertising, which started waaay back when just posters were put up to sell things. Target marketing was created to "target" the right customer. Instead of wasting millions of dollars on advertising to just anyone, we focus on the best consumer that's willing to buy the product or service. Thus, making sure the money of the client is spent the best way. Example, would it be smart to put ads for beer in a parenting magazine, when your chances of responses would be few?
