Does it cost to send your kid to preschool?

Joie Kemmis: Yes, usually it does. All preschools are technically private (not including Head Start programs etc.) because preschool isn't included in the public K-12 education system. There are government programs like Head Start that offer free preschools, but they are very hard to get into and there is often a long waiting list and few resources.

Dexter Dicostanzo: Head Start and state preschools are free for low income people. The preschool I work at charges $650 a month for full time care for a 2-5 year old. Prices vary from state to state and even city to city. Rich private schools will charge more of course. A small home day care would be less

Sook Hershkowitz: Sounds more like she has the child in full day day care. Does she need full day care? then pay up. If not, the child should be going to half day preschool. Most preschools cost about $350 a month for PART TIME care. Did she shop around for the best program to fit her needs, the needs of your ch! ild, AND budget? Some school districts have preschool, but there usually is a wait list. Sometimes your local city parks and recreation dept will run a preschool program for far cheaper. Even co-op preschools are cheaper too, but high quality. Head Start is for low-income, usually under $24,000 a year for a single mom. Anyone can apply, as they do accept some over-income kids if there is a slot. Call preschools yourself in the area, and find out what is out there. (and if the child is 3, part time preschool isn 't necessary expect for giving mom a break. 4 year olds go to preK, better value)(but if she needs full time day care, then this is a different story....Show more

Dick Ovdenk: Not all preschools cost money. My little sister was in preschool for two years at two different schools. One was at a church and it costed money, but another was at a school from pre school to fifth grade and it was free, but you still had to book a place for your child early, because ! your child may not get a spot.
